When someone is accused of the crimes that Sean “Diddy” Combs is alleged to have committed, it leads to questions about where the alleged behavior all came from. Over the years, the music mogul has been very open about his humble beginnings, but have we ever truly known the real Sean Combs?
In light of his recent arrest on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking, many of the Bad Boy Entertainment founder’s past comments are raising eyebrows about what he’s allegedly been up to all this time. A resurfaced clip of the rapper/producer discussing his father has some wondering if the apple didn’t fall far from tree.
In the interview, Diddy reveals that his father was a big drug dealer in Harlem who built a profitable business.
Legend has it that his father worked for Harlem Mobsters Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes but Diddy quickly corrected the reporter and the rumors. He said his father didn’t work for the two gangsters but had his own crew and was a drug “Kingpin” in his own right, on the same level as Lucas and Barnes, the two gangsters whose lives inspired movies and televisions series, one of them starring Denzel Washington.
“That’s not something I glorify, but he was in Harlem and he was doing his thing, selling narcotics,” Combs said. “And we all know what that gets you. That’s only going to have you end up in jail or dead. It is the reason whyI didn’t follow in those footsteps.”
Though he didn’t specifically follow his father’s lead, he admits that there are similarities between them, explaining, “I’m definitely like him, but I’m just doing it in a legal way.”
He revealed that he didn’t find out the truth about his father until he began to research. “That was before the internet,’’ he said.
He found a newspaper article about his dad’s funeral. The article focused on the family’s glamour, his mom wearing a floor-length fur coat at the funeral and Diddy, who was only three, sporting a mink coat. “That was the story…our family.’’
Diddy noted that the same drive that made him successful in the music world would have pushed him to be just like his father.
In the interview, Diddy told the reporter “I understood why my mother didn’t tell me the truth,” he said. “Where I was living, I would have probably been one of the biggest drug dealers out there, because I would have the type of person I would have wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps.”
Things took an interesting turn when he was asked by the reporter if people know “the real Sean Combs.” He immediately responded “no.”
Diddy pleaded not guilty to the charges and has maintained his innocence of all the allegations against him, but the disturbing details in the indictment present the alleged actions of someone we never really knew.
Near the ending of the video, Diddy encouraged the world to watch the ending of his story, and to do that “You have to come along for the ride. That’s part of the journey.”
He said you don’t follow someone for twenty years and not watch the end of the movie. Then he, smiled. “Believe me, I have an action-packed ending for you.”
