Prominent cultural commentator and media personality DJ Akademiks has sparked heated discussions across the music and sports worlds by comparing Lil Wayne’s enduring legacy in hip-hop to NBA legend Allen Iverson’s impact on basketball.
During a Twitch livestream on December 17, 2024, DJ Akademiks reacted to Lil Wayne’s comment on Kendrick Lamar on The Skip Bayless Show on Monday, where Weezy discussed being overlooked for the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show.
Akademiks asserted that Wayne’s legacy in hip-hop would ultimately be comparable to that of NBA legend Allen Iverson.
“Lil Wayne’s legacy in hip hop is going to kind a go down like Allen Iverson, the NBA basketball player,” Akademiks said.
Weezy’s response came after Lamar’s Wacced Out Murals, in which he put a subtle jab at Wayne and mocked him for expressing disappointment over missing the opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
DJ Akademiks draws Allen Iverson parallel to Lil Wayne’s legacy
During his Twitch livestream, DJ Akademiks asserted that Lil Wayne’s legacy in hip-hop is far greater than many might assume. He compared him to NBA legend Allen Iverson and explained that Lil Wayne revolutionized the mixtape era at a time when it was not widely recognized or celebrated.
He suggested that while today’s “championships” in hip-hop are primarily measured through albums, Wayne’s contributions to mixtapes have cemented his unparalleled influence and enduring legacy in the genre.
“What do I mean? Because a lot of Wayne did to get that throne was done in the mixtape era. And these days we look at a lot of albums as the championship pursuit, because we have almost like extinguished… He (Wayne) kinda look like a guys who definitely revolutionize the game,” he explained.
According to Yonge Mag, three years post-retirement, Iverson is still celebrated as one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers, fiercest competitors, and greatest pound-for-pound players. As reported by Philadelphia Today, he has been to seven All-NBA selections, 11 All-Star appearances, and an Olympic bronze medal.
The drama surrounding DJ Akademiks’ comparison of Lil Wayne to Allen Iverson began in late November 2024, when Kendrick Lamar released a song titled Wacced Out Murals.
In the track, Lamar seemingly aimed at Wayne, claiming his success overshadowed Wayne’s efforts. He then rapped about winning the Super Bowl and noted that only Nas congratulated him.
“Used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down. Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me / All these niggas agitated, I’m just glad they showin’ they faces,” Lamar rapped.
On November 23, 2024, Wayne seemingly addressed Lamar’s apparent jab in a tweet. Wayne warned against mistaking his kindness for weakness and implied that if someone disturbed him, he would retaliate forcefully.
“Man wtf I do?! I just be chillin & dey still kome 4 my head. Let’s not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all. No one really wants destruction, not even me but I shall destroy if disturbed. On me. Love,” Weezy tweeted.
Kendrick Lamar referenced Wayne’s disappointment over the Super Bowl stems from events earlier that year. On September 8, 2024, Jay-Z announced Kendrick Lamar as the headlining performer for the Apple Music Super Bowl 2025 Halftime Show.
Wayne openly expressed feeling hurt by the news, as the event would take place in his hometown of New Orleans. Currently, Kendrick Lamar has not publicly responded to Wayne’s tweet, nor has Wayne addressed DJ Akademiks’ comparison.
The 59th Super Bowl in New Orleans is scheduled for February 9, 2025.
