Miami-Dade County has honoured hip-hop legends like DJ Khaled, City Girls, Trina and Trick Daddy with their own street names.

Last Wednesday (March 19), it was revealed that streets along 18th Avenue in Liberty City will be named after songs from Miami’s most famous rappers. Commissioner Keon Hardemon proposed the decision in an attempt “to encourage economic development in our community”.

“If you play this music to the people who are from this area, they are going to light up like it’s the Fourth of July,” Hardemon said (via NBC Miami). “The essence of this is to… let people know that this exists in Miami-Dade County and you should come and see it.”

The renamed streets will honour 29 influential artists who helped shape Miami’s rich musical landscape. For example, Trick Daddy, DJ Khaled, Flo Rida and Trina were all awarded their own streets for their immense work putting Miami on the map in hip-hop.

Other names like ‘Soul Ties’ Street (Ball Greezy), ‘Post & Delete’ Street (Zoey Dollaz) and ‘Big Money Baller’ Street (JT Money) pay tribute to local talent who keep on redefining the city’s hip-hop scene.

Hardemon did suggest that ‘People Change’ Terrace would be originally called ‘Grind With Me’ Terrace – named after the 2005 Pretty Ricky hit – but Commissioner Eileen Higgins pushed back on the name. She said: “I don’t want to walk down any street where somebody can say that to me without my permission.”
