Doechii’s been on quite a run this year. Most recently, the TDE rapper was named Variety‘s 2024 ‘Hip Hop Disruptor.’ Along with Doechii, several others were honored at the outlet’s eighth annual hitmaker event on Dec.7. The “Nissan Altima” rapper jumped on Instagram to share the news with her fans. Doechii posted a collage of photos and videos from the event, writing in the post’s caption, “Hip-Hop Disruptor Of The Year. Thank you @variety @topdawgent and @capitolmusic [flower emoji].
Prior to this, Doechii gave a groundbreaking performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The rapper noted that her performance was about “honoring hip hop.” Doechii also showcased the intertwined nature between women and hip-hop culture with modern dance by connecting her and the dancers through cornrow braids. She credits Solange and the late MF Doom for the inspiration behind the performance.
Doechii’s On The Move
Released on Aug.30, Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal landed at No.9 on Rolling Stone’s Best Albums of 2024 list. The track “Denial Is a River” is also on RS‘s Best Songs list at No. 68. The mixtape helped propel her into the spotlight, earning several Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist and Rap Album of the Year.
In September, Doechii spoke about Alligator Bites Never Heal and her aspirations for a Grammy. “There’s a space that I feel like that we need to fill in hip-hop right now,” she said. “This project, sonically, feels nostalgic, but it also feels forward, and it feels fresh … I think we just need to take a beat for a second and get back to maintaining traditions in hip-hop, talking about our feelings, being vulnerable in hip-hop again, and making sure that the heart of hip-hop stays alive.”
