Refilwe Matabane, also known as Fif laa said It’s nice to see more female DJs being acknowledged for their work.
FEMALE DJs are still struggling to receive the recognition they deserve, despite making strides in the industry.
This is the view of Refilwe Matabane, also known as Fif laa, a hip-hop DJ from the south of Joburg.
Fif laa, who is a qualified strategist and marketing manager at a record label, spoke to the Daily Sun.
She believes the industry still has far to go in ensuring equal opportunities for all creatives.
“The industry still needs to open up more to embrace each and every individual, no matter their background, identity, or what they identify as. There should be freedom for creatives to express themselves, no matter who they are,” she said.
As South Africa commemorates Human Rights Day, she reflected on the occasion’s significance for creatives.
“Creatives should have the freedom to express themselves without fear. There should be no limitations based on identity or background. The industry must create a space where everyone is valued and treated equally,” she said.

Speaking on the highs and lows of her career, she said the positives include more women getting recognition and gigs. “It’s nice to see more female DJs being acknowledged for their work,” she said.
However, she pointed out that inequality remains a major issue.
“The biggest challenge is still the pay gap. Women DJs are not paid the same as their male counterparts. That inequality is something that really needs to be fixed,” she said.
Despite these struggles, she remains hopeful and continues to push for more inclusivity and fairness in the industry.
