German rail firm trials robotic dog to see off graffiti artists

Dogs have helped police to find missing people, detect drugs or explosives and apprehend suspects since about the 14th century.

Now, Deutsche Bahn, the German rail operator, has jumped on the bandwagon and hired a dog to stop graffiti sprayers defacing its trains. But Spot, as it is called, cannot be bribed with sausages and is too slow to chase offenders — it is a robodog.

With a maximum speed of 7km/h, Spot’s mission was not to catch graffiti artists but to transmit live, high-resolution footage of them to Deutsche Bahn’s security staff.

It was sent out to patrol depots for S-Bahn commuter trains in Munich for a one-month trial, equipped with three cameras and packed with artificial intelligence to detect “unauthorised personnel or other
