Graffiti: Art of the people

HOUGHTON LAKE- Next time you drive through Houghton Lake, you may notice a splash of color here and there that you’ve never seen before. Graffiti artist, Chris Bell of Houghton Lake is the founder of Aerosol Art by Chris and has taken the community by storm with his creative and eye-catching graffiti art. Businesses are jumping at the opportunity to add a unique flare to their building.

Bell is originally from California and moved to Houghton Lake in 2012. Currently, he is a manger for Taco Bell and enjoys his day-time job, but nothing will match his passion for graffiti art. With the support of his wife Angie, and their 8 children between them, Bell can pursue his art after his manager shifts and on the weekends.

Bells’ enthusiasm for the art started when he was in his 20’s in Vegas, doodling on storm drains and getting a knack for the art. He learned to appreciate the beauty of graffiti art and realized it was so much more than what some would consider “vandalism”. To Bell, this art form has turned his love of the art into a substantial side job.

Sullivan Beach, Packy’s Pet Supplies, Mom’s Unique Garage Sale, and Split End Salon are just a few businesses that have already had murals and artwork done by Chris. He has also been contacted by 9&10 news in Cadillac, and the ROOC in Roscommon for potential upcoming art pieces. To date, he has done four private residence fences, with inquiries coming in daily.

“It’s a strange feeling that people are even recognizing me at Wal-Mart or places around town. I’m having a blast doing this for the community and if I can make a little extra for my family, it’s a win-win.” said Bell.

So how much does something like this cost? Customers provide the paint supplies, usually from Arnie’s Arts and Crafts in Houghton Lake, and then Bell just asks for a tip at a dollar amount of your choice. There is no hourly rate, or base fee, Bell truly does this for whatever you think his time is worth.

“It’s hard to put a value on art,” said Bell. “I’m doing them a service and doing what they ask. Customers give me an idea of what they want to see, not necessarily what I want to see.” So far Bell has been more than happy and appreciative of the tips he has received.

Graffiti art may not be for everyone, but Bell has a great point for anybody that isn’t a fan. “Graffiti was created by youth in the 70’s, it wasn’t taught by a professor in a classroom. American’s started graffiti and I’m blessed to be able to share my gift with the people that appreciate it.”

Graffiti allows an artist to let their imaginations run wild. It can transform a once drab space into something people are excited to see. We can’t wait to see what Chris has in store for our community!
