Graffiti on Ypao Road retaining wall draws condemnation from DPW director

Staff at the Department of Public Works spent part of their Friday covering up graffiti spray-painted on the relatively newly built retaining wall that goes along the cliffside portion of Route 14B, also known as Ypao Road.

The vandalism drew much ire from DPW Director Vincent Arriola, who had some choice words for those who painted the graffiti.

“It’s sad and unfortunate that there are still selfish, low-life individuals out there who continue to harm, disrespect and deface our beautiful island. This is not art, this is litter and vandalism,” Arriola said.

“I’d like to get a can of spray paint and graffiti their face, even their mom’s face, and let’s see how they like it. I hope that day comes very soon,” the director added.

Arriola said he had met Friday morning with the chair of a group out of the Guam Chamber of Commerce addressing graffiti on island.

The retaining wall was built as part of a $10 million widening project completed last year. The project took two years, according to Post files. It included the construction of sidewalks and streetlights, in addition to the 20-foot tall retaining wall.

“We are excited about the enhanced road system delivered with Phase 1 and look forward to the next phase, which will continue improving road safety,” Arriola said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in November.
