Graffiti Pier and its surrounding acres are on pace to be sold to Delaware River Waterfront Corporation.

Graffiti Pier owner Conrail announced it has plans to sell the property and the six acres surrounding it to prospective buyer, Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, before the end of 2024, writes Beatrice Forman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The news comes less than two months after a portion of the abandoned pier in Port Richmond fell into the Delaware River on July 31.

Prior to becoming covered in overlapping tags and half-finished murals, Graffiti Pier was previously a coal yard for Reading Company.

Conrail took over as its owner in 1978 and later ceased operations at the pier in 1995.

The pier has since become a hot spot for graffiti artists looking to practice and urban explorers.

In 2019, the waterfront corporation announced plans to turn the space into an official public art park. It has since received $2 million in federal funding to cover early construction costs. The project, however, stalled since a sale has yet to go through.

“It’s a major multimillion-dollar transaction in land, and we can’t start selling property without the approval of our board,” said Conrail’s general counsel Daniel Dwyer.

Approval is expected to come at a board meeting on November 14.
