Graffiti rock deadline set

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A tentative deadline has been announced for a beloved Bellingham landmark to be moved.

WSDOT spokesperson RB McKeon tells KGMI that the graffiti rock needs to have a new home identified by June 1. “We’re working with our partners to find a solution that honors what the Bellingham Rock has meant to the community and we’re hopeful we’ll find a place that reflects that in one way, shape or form,” McKeon said in a statement to MBN.

The rock is in the direct path of a temporary bypass road that will keep traffic moving during fish passage construction through Chuckanut Creek.

McKeon says WSDOT will facilitate the moving process as long as the rock remains publicly accessible at a feasible location that meets safety and environmental protection requirements.

She adds that if the agency sees “significant progress” towards finding its new home, it may be possible to slightly extend the June 1 deadline.

If no home is found, WSDOT will likely break the rock apart to preserve some of its pieces and share them with a public entity like the Whatcom Museum.

People have celebrated graduations and birthdays, sent get-well messages and even memorialized loved ones on the rock since it was first tagged in 1969.
