Don’t go looking for pasta and marinara sauce. The Spaghetti Social Art Show is all about graffiti-style painting and partying in old Westwego.
As anyone who attended a similar event on Sala Avenue in April 2023 can tell you, it’s a very cool experience in a charming, unexpected locale, far beyond the usual New Orleans art districts.
Once again, the man behind the event is Westwego native Josh Wingerter, who became a graffiti hero when he blanketed Frenchmen Street with stencil murals at the start of the coronavirus lockdown. Wingerter’s outdoor exhibit was a big hit during the era of social distancing.
Wingerter won’t be alone. He’ll be joined by his usual art collaborators Dago and Paco, plus New Orleans’ first-generation graffiti master Lionel Milton.
The artistic centerpiece will be a small Sala Street house converted into an enveloping art environment.
Based on the success of the last house installation and preview photos, this will be a knockout art experience.
In addition to visual art, expect live music by Shawan Rice, Xeno Moon Flower, Dreux Gerard, and others, and hair styling performances by Jessica Masters and Britain Croll. Look for outdoor light projections and — overhead — expect an air show demonstration. Food will be provided by Lion Heart catering.
The free event is restricted to adults 21 and older. Attendees are encouraged to costume or dress formally for the event. A do-it-yourself red carpet will be provided for photos.
The street art soiree takes place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at 401 Sala Ave. and the surrounding area.
