THE highly anticipated Hennessy Back to the City Festival is set to return on 12 October 2024.

It’ll take place at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Joburg, promising an unforgettable experience for hip-hop lovers.

With more than 100 artists performing, the festival’s gearing up to be its biggest edition yet.

Back to The City’s more than just a music event, it’s a cultural movement that unites people from all walks of life under the banner of hip-hop. The festival celebrates diversity, promotes creativity, and embraces the power of music to connect people.

This year’s festival will feature an impressive range of activities, including 100 stalls selling merchandise, streetwear, records, art, and accessories, and more than 200 food stalls.

Basketball courts and skating ramps will also be available for those looking to show their skills, adding to the interactive atmosphere.

The line-up boasts more than 100 emcees, 40 DJs, 13 graffiti crews, and an array of dance battles and beatboxing performances. Attendees can expect electrifying performances from both iconic veterans and emerging talents, highlighting the richness of hip-hop culture.

Special segments include a power hour featuring Qwellers, Tony Dayimane, Usimamane, and K Keed, as well as a heritage performance by Thebe. The festival will also honour albums turning 20 years, with performances by Zubz, Mr Selwyn, Pitch Black Afro, and Lection paying tribute to the late HHP.

“Every year, we aim to make the festival a worthwhile experience. People travel from across the country and continent to experience Back to the City, and we always strive to step it up. This year’s particularly special as we’re celebrating 30 years of democracy. Hip-hop and poetry played a vital role in our country’s struggle for freedom, and we want to honour that legacy,” said Osmic Menoe, director of Ritual Media Group (RMG).
