DJ Spinderella, the former DJ of the iconic ‘90s hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa, recently shared a surprising revelation about the group’s hit song “Push It” and the backlash they faced during its early performances.

In a candid interview on the popular podcast “Drink Champs,” Spinderella recalled how the group was once threatened with arrest if they performed the catchy track at certain venues, due to misconceptions about the song’s lyrics.

Speaking on the podcast, Spinderella explained that venue executives misunderstood the song’s lyrics, believing they were sexually explicit. “It was not a sexual song,” she said. “We were literally talking about dancing on the dance floor. And people took that and took it the other way, and it actually worked for us.”

Despite the innocent nature of the lyrics, Salt-N-Pepa faced threats from venue officials and authorities who warned that playing the track could result in arrest.

“There were times where we were told, ‘If you play that song here, you can get arrested,’” Spinderella recalled. “Somehow, we got to a point where we had to convince everybody that this is not about what you think it’s about. And that is the truth.”

Spinderella’s account echoes similar experiences shared by fellow group member Sandra “Pepa” Denton, who in a 2021 interview with Page Six, also recalled the controversy surrounding “Push It.”

Denton explained that police would sometimes wait for the group, believing the song contained explicit language. “We were saying ‘push it,’ but they thought we were saying something else,” Denton said.

DJ Spinderella split from the group in 2019 and during the interview, she revealed it was due to not feeling respected.

“You just grow up. You just get to a point where things will not be tolerated. And respect should be mutual. And when respect is mutual, we can move and do whatever,” she explained. “But when respect is not mutual, then what are you here for? The bag. That don’t last because I can get a bag without it.”
