The Lock in Dance Company and the BIA BIA dance team have only existed for four years, but they have wasted no time in making their mark on the dance world. Early in May, this standout team from Patterson triumphed over six other groups in their category to win first place in the Mini Co’ed Hip Hop division at the renowned 2025 Dance Summit in Orlando, Florida. This competition is considered by many in the competitive dance world as a premier end-of-season event. The Dance Summit brings together dancers from around the world for world-class performances and life-long friendships among the teammates and their fellow competitors.
The name, BIA BIA, stands for “Babies in Action” and the team is made up of seven to nine year old students. The group was founded by Kheira Monet and Hanna Monroe, both world class dancers themselves, to showcase talented performers from Patterson. The athletes may be young, but they earned their way onto the team through auditions and they put in hours of practice a week. In the weeks leading up to a competition, they may put in as many as six hours of practice each week in addition to private practices as individual dancers. Ultimately, their passion and hard work paid off with a major win in a major venue.
This squad has competed in Sacramento, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Bakersfield, and Anaheim. To participate in a prestigious event like the Dance Summit in Orlando, they must receive a bid from one of the judges. At the performance in Anaheim, these Patterson dancers were excited to receive a full bid for the 2025 Dance Summit. There are three levels of bids that a team may receive. A regular bid provides an invitation to the event, but the group must finance the trip themselves. A partial bid includes some financial assistance along with the invitation. The highest bid is called a full bid and provides full financial assistance to compete. It also includes a trip to Disneyworld. BIA BIA has received bids before, but this year was the first time they have received a full bid. After all the hours of practice, they found it gratifying to receive the bid and exhilarating to win first place in their division.
BIA BIA walked in the recent Apricot Fiesta Parade and have other events coming up. They are hosting a free hip hop workshop this Saturday, June 14. They will also be performing in Gustine at an end-of-season recital in conjunction with Trinity Dance Center on June 18,19, 20. If you are interested in getting your child involved, these performances might provide you with an opportunity to see what they are all about. They bill themselves on their Facebook page as “a competitive hip hop competition team based out of Trinity Dance Center in Patterson, California.” You can find them on Facebook under the page named The Lock In. You can also interact with them on Instagram under the handle thelockin.dnco. Feel free to message them on either platform for more details on the upcoming events. Meanwhile, it is likely that this group will continue to place Patterson on the map in the world of dance as they continue to impress judges and leave a lasting impression in competitions across the country.
