Mannie Fresh, Legatron Prime and more New Orleans DJs create Apple Music mixes ahead of Super Bowl

Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, Apple Music has commissioned New Orleans DJs and producers Mannie Fresh, Legatron Prime, KLC the Drum Major and DJ Poppa to create a set of DJ mixes highlighting the city’s hip-hop legacy. The four mixes are now available on Apple Music via apple.co/_RoadToHalftime.

There’s a lot of bounce and a ton of New Orleans artists — and a fair amount of Kendrick Lamar, who plays this year’s Halftime Show — but each hour-long mix also has a unique spin. Naturally, Mannie Fresh’s mix leans into his Cash Money history with songs by Juvenile, Big Tymers and Lil Wayne but also remixes a huge range of pop, from Janet Jackson and Usher to Hall & Oates and MGMT. Mannie once told NPR he could turn anything into a bounce track, and he proves it here.

KLC the Drum Major similarly draws from his No Limits Records legacy as part of Beats by the Pound. He mixes Mystikal, Master P and Silkk The Shocker between tracks by Ludacris, T.I., Ice Cube and Tupac. KLC also gives a nod to Wayne with a new mix on “A Milli.”

Legatron Prime keeps things current in her mix with tracks by New Orleans artists Rob49, Subtweet Shawn and T99zy alongside Beyonce, Ice Spice and Sexy Redd. She also gives a big nod to New Orleans hip-hop collective glbl wrmng at the end by including their latest single “Somebody.”

And DJ Poppa created a classic New Orleans party mix that’s deep on local artists, from Juvenile and Lil Wayne to Mr. Magic, Choppa and DJ Jubilee. It’s the kind of satisfying DJ work that comes from Poppa’s deep experience in local clubs and bars.

Apple Music, which sponsors the Halftime Show, commissioned the DJ mixes as part of a series the streaming platform is curating ahead of the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Caesars Superdome. The “Road to Halftime” series highlights Kendrick Lamar’s music along with SZA, who will be a guest performer during the show. But there also are playlists curated by NFL players Jalen Hurts, Travis Kelce, Jayden Daniels and others, playlists for each NFL team and music by Jon Batiste, Ledisi and Lauren Daigle. Batiste is set to perform the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, Ledisi will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and Lauren Daigle will join Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews for a performance of “America the Beautiful.”
