MIDVALE — Midvale City is revitalizing its arts and culture district with new paintings and murals. The murals will be on display during Saturday’s Los Muros on Main: Midvale City Mural Festival.
Midvale officials said the city’s Main Street has fallen into disrepair. But for the fourth year in a row, they’ve chosen artists to paint murals in a six-to-eight-block stretch.
Artists were chosen to paint murals on the walls of businesses, which, according to Assistant City Manager Nate Rockwood, cuts down on graffiti.
“They still get tagged, but it’s actually less likely they get tagged. There’s almost a credibility on the street of ‘You don’t tag a mural.’”
The city reviewed more than 100 entries by artists for this year’s festival. Some of the artists will be painting their murals live during the festival.
Artists will also be selling their work. There will be chalk art, food trucks and a beer garden at this weekend’s event.
The city will close its Main Street, allowing only foot traffic.
“We’re really creating sort of a walking art gallery. As you walk up and down the street to go to restaurants, you go to different shops, you can also see art, basically from all over the world in the form of murals.”
