The Mesa Dance Festival will take place on Sunday with the goal of bringing the dance community together from across Southern California to OCC. The Orange Coast College Dance Department will be hosting the all-day event, beginning with hip-hop dance workshops taught by acclaimed choreographers and performers in the hip-hop community.

These workshops are located in the OCC gymnasium and are open for anyone to join. Workshops will begin starting at 11 a.m. with the last workshop ending at 4:15 p.m. A total of four workshops, each delivering different dance style classes, will be conducted at specific times listed on The Mesa Dance Festival flyers posted across campus.

Following the workshops, a dance battle will be held from 5:00-6:30 p.m. with registration starting at 4:30 p.m. in front of the Robert B. Moore Theater.

OCC dance instructor and one of the head coordinators of the Mesa Dance Festival Jose Costas described the event as an all-inclusive opportunity for people to learn about hip-hop.

“It is important, any production that we create, we do it for the community,” Costas said. “This event, it’s important that we honor the community of people that’s around us.”

While creating an environment that welcomes dancers around the area is important, Costas also hopes for the event bring well deserved recognition to the OCC dance department

The festival will end with an evening show that lasts from 7-10 p.m. located at the Robert B. Moore Theater. The evening event will showcase dance groups and companies from all over Southern California to perform their own choreography.

“It’s super important for me to get more experience with performing and being in front of an audience, especially doing a solo,” Ella Tracy said when asked about her performance in the evening show. “That’s scary for a lot of people and it’s scary for me as well, but I think it’s important to push past the nerves and push past worrying about the judgment of others and just do what I love.”
