A spray paint wielding vandal has seemingly struck again in the exact same spot just one day after offensive graffiti they were responsible for was removed.
‘The Haribo Proposal’ – a piece of street art on the north abutment of the New American Bridge in Newbury town centre – was found to be defaced with a number of racist, homophobic and misogynistic phrases and expletive words last weekend.
This offensive vandalism has been attributed to a graffiti user known only as the ‘Hangman’.
The image of a schoolboy proposing to a schoolgirl with a Haribo ring which was created by the street artist ‘Hendog’ last November was covered with a rudimentary hanging stick man.
A penis was painted on the boy and the word hangman was also spray painted over the entire image.
The offensive phrases were painted on the brick wall next to the image, but all of this was removed on Monday lunchtime by West Berkshire Council workers.
However, the Hangman struck again just a day after he first defaced the popular local landmark.
He has retagged his moniker over The Haribo Proposal, added a smiley face and another two penises, respraying the one on the schoolboy and adding another on his stick man.
Although less offensive this time, phrases on the wall now include “choose peace, choose life, choose boobies” and “year cheers”.
The words are accompanied by several stick figures and simplistic alien-looking creatures.
The Canal & River Trust’s information board to the east of the abutment has also been vandalised with more stick men images.
On his Instagram page, the Hangman has documented his continued graffiti crime spree.
Declaring that he re-vandalised the spot on Tuesday, January 7, he said of The Haribo Proposal: “Who DID THIS GET OUT OF NEWBURY INIT THIS TOWNS NOT FOR YOU BRO.”
After his artwork was originally defaced, Hendog stated he was outraged by the offensive phrases that he felt were obviously deeply concerning.
He said: “People like this seek attention and we’re all buying into it.
“Acts like this don’t deserve recognition, energy or time and goes against everything that street art should be about.”
