For the past two mornings, Fallbrook residents have woken up to someone else’s idea of self-expression-graffiti scrawled across our town, this time laced with profanity about the police.
What drives someone to deface the community where they live with their friends and family? Do they prefer the look of a low-class, rundown cityscape like Skid Row in LA? Are they more comfortable in an environment that’s neglected and unkempt? What exactly are they trying to achieve? Is it about rebellion, attention, or something or just hatred for the rest of the community?
I genuinely want to understand. If you know the individuals responsible-if you are one of them-I invite you to talk to me. Help me see your perspective, and in return, I’ll do my best to explain it to the many residents who are deeply frustrated by the vandalism or maybe help figure out how to provide some other place for self-expression.
Do the parents of these individuals know what’s happening? Are there so-called “leaders” encouraging this behavior? Is there a belief that defacing private property is some kind of statement? If so, what is the message typically? Some of it is very clearly against our cops this time, but it’s not always like that.
Or is it people from Oceanside or Escondido doing it to make Fallbrook look bad?
Perhaps a question is: Do we need a designated public space for street art? Would that curb the tagging, or is this just about destruction rather than creation? Because let’s be honest-this isn’t art.
I don’t have all the answers. I don’t have any answers. But I do know that Fallbrook is a beautiful town, minus the trashy graffiti and we want to keep it that way. If you have any insights, I’d love to hear from you. No one should have to constantly paint the outside of their property from vandalism.
