(KRON) — Two murals representing Palestinian history and a call to a ceasefire in San Francisco’s Mission District were vandalized with Islamophobic graffiti earlier this week. The two murals, according to The Arab Resource and Organizing Center in San Francisco (AROC), were defaced with the word “Terrorists.”
We were shocked to see, just two days before a planned educational tour with our youth program at Clarion Alley, that the murals were defaced with racist slurs. What if our youth had been exposed to that?

The defaced murals were painted in 2017 and 2018 and are part of the historic Clarion Alley, where colorful murals depict Mission District culture and social justice history, drawing visits from countless residents and tourists alike.
Project leaders quickly restored the murals attacked this week and removed the hateful graffiti, AROC said.
“While our culture is being erased by Israel’s genocide, our murals provide us and others with education and inspiration and help young people to think more critically,” Chris Gazalah, a Palestinian muralist and San Francisco-based artist, said in a statement.
On Thursday morning, the CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) called on the Biden Administration to end US military aid to Israel and called for an immediate end to Israel’s war on Gaza.
KRON4 has contacted the San Francisco Police Department for comment but has not heard anything back as of this report.
