SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The Whale, of “Out of the Blue” fame in Salt Lake City’s 9th and 9th neighborhood, got a scrub down after stencil graffiti appeared on the humpback’s dorsal.
The spray paint addition was noticed Wednesday morning, which depicts two soldiers dressed in uniforms reminiscent of 1940s-era Nazi regalia. Each of the two soldiers has an arm band – one depicting the Republican elephant, and one depicting the Democratic donkey.
They’re at the door of what appears to be a restroom, with the door open wide, a person seated on a toilet looking appalled at the intrusion.
Next to the doorway is the question: “Did you vote?”
They style is similar to guerrilla-style art by the mysterious Banksy, which sometimes shows up in American cities, some of which embrace the graffiti, and some of which do not.
While Banksy or otherwise, the city fell into the latter category.
Workers were busy midmorning scrubbing the political message off Salt Lake City’s endearingly odd landmark.
The Salt Lake City Police Department stated it was “aware of criminal mischief painted on the SLC Whale,” and asked anyone with information on the surreptitious sprayer to contact the non-emergency dispatch line at 801-799-3000.
No arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified.
