Portland Graffiti Artist KASR Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison After Plea Deal in City Crackdown on Vandalism

Jerry Mijangos, known on the streets and underpasses of Portland as KASR, has made history as the first graffiti vandal to be imprisoned under the city’s recent crackdown efforts. According to OregonLive, Mijangos was sentenced to 2½ years in prison yesterday, the conclusion of a series of acts defacing public and private properties that began way back in 2021.

The magnitude of Mijangos’ tagging spree is evident by his rap sheet, the man slipped through the cracks of the system several times before, getting pinched by police in 2021 and repeatedly released, continuing to tag the city with his unmistakable moniker, per KGW, even serving probation for prior offenses didn’t curb his artistic urges—a defiance that finally caught up with him.

In an effort to combat what has become a sore sight for many Portlanders, law enforcement has stepped up its game; Chief Bob Day, according to a statement obtained by KPTV, has said, “Graffiti remains a significant concern for our community. It is one of the most common complaints I hear about, and I understand the reason behind it. Senseless vandalism makes a city look neglected and tarnishes its image. The arrest and significant sentence for Jerry Mijangos sends a message to the people committing this illegal act that it will not be tolerated. Thank you to our officers who are trying to investigate and apprehend graffiti suspects and the DA’s office for their continued partnership.”

Mijangos’ legal battle ended yesterday when he reached a plea deal, leading to Judge Andrew Lavin condemning him the following day to 30 months behind bars aligning with the terms spread out across two counts of first-degree criminal mischief and two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, a timeline informed by OregonLive. This sentence has officially transferred Mijangos to the Oregon Department of Corrections where his tagging days, at least for the next two and a half years, will be on pause.
