Pras Michel, a founding member of the iconic 90s group The Fugees, has announced his departure from the band amid ongoing legal struggles and the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence. The 52-year-old rapper, whose real name is Prakazrel Samuel Michel, confirmed the news during an interview with Variety, saying, “I’m done with that.”
This marks the end of an era for The Fugees, whose hits like Killing Me Softly and Ready or Not defined a generation. The group, which also includes Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, has been plagued by disputes over their 2023 tour and personal legal battles, culminating in Michel’s decision to step away permanently.
Legal Drama and Group Turmoil
Earlier this year, Michel filed a lawsuit against Lauryn Hill, alleging that she had mismanaged the group’s 2023 US tour. The suit accused Hill of fraud, breach of contract, and inflating the tour’s budget with “unnecessary and likely fictitious” expenses. It also claimed Hill rejected a $5 million Coachella offer without informing the group, costing Michel a significant payday.
The fallout led to the cancellation of the Miseducation Anniversary tour in the US, with only UK and European dates proceeding. However, Michel’s conviction on 10 counts of corruption has barred him from international travel, further isolating him from the band’s plans.
Facing Over 20 Years Behind Bars
Michel’s legal troubles stem from his involvement in the massive $4.5 billion embezzlement scandal tied to Malaysia’s 1MDB sovereign wealth fund. Convicted on multiple charges, Michel is awaiting sentencing and could face over 20 years in prison. Despite the looming consequences, he remains steadfast about his journey.
“I believe in my path and my journey,” Michel told Variety. “It’s better to have a small group of people who truly support you than a crowd that disappears when things get tough.”
The Fugees’ Uncertain Future
With Michel’s exit, the future of The Fugees appears uncertain. The trio’s occasional reunions have been marred by legal issues and creative differences, leaving fans wondering if they’ll ever see the group together again.
As Michel focuses on his personal battles, it’s clear that The Fugees, once a beacon of 90s hip-hop, are facing their final chapter.
