303 Magazine: Hello! How did you first get into DJing? What was it about the art form that initially appealed to you?

DJ Deon: My stepdad introduced me to deejaying when I was five, back in 1987. I was instantly hooked by the glow of his Technics SL-1200 MK2s, the shake of the Sonic concert speakers, and the endless vinyl. But more than anything, it was the joy and good vibes he created for others that made me fall in love with the art.

303: When did you decide to pursue DJing professionally?

DJ Deon: Music has always been a part of my life, but I decided to pursue DJing professionally after getting my break at a radio station in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Those years helped me realize that if I wasn’t good at what I did — selecting songs, producing segments, and creating a vibe — they wouldn’t have kept me around.

303: Can you describe your sound? What vibe do you try to achieve?

DJ Deon: Since 1987, growing up in Chicago around my stepdad and his DJ friends, I was exposed to a wide range of genres: House, Jazz, Salsa, Rock, R&B, Hip-Hop, Funk, Opera, and more. That early influence shaped my versatile sound. During a show, I aim to set the atmosphere by drawing on that deep musical knowledge, creating a mood that ensures an enjoyable experience from start to finish.

303: You’ll be curating the vibe for DFW 2025 Day 3, the theme of which is “Adaptive.” Can you tell me a little bit about what playing DFW means to you?

DJ Deon: Playing DFW 2025, especially with the theme “Adaptive,” is a meaningful opportunity. It’s about curating a soundscape that reflects resilience, transformation, and inclusion. Music, like fashion, evolves and this set is my way of connecting people through sound while celebrating adaptability.

Given the night’s theme, it’s important to be mindful of how the environment affects all guests, especially those with sensory sensitivities. As a DJ, I know music can energize but also soothe. For this event, I’m keeping volume comfortable, avoiding jarring effects, and curating a balanced set for an inclusive, calming vibe. Mic use will be clear, brief, and limited to prevent overstimulation. The goal is a welcoming, sensory-considerate space for all.

303: Finally, is there anything else that I didn’t mention that you’d like to address? Is there anyone out there you’d like to shout out?

DJ Deon: I’d like to thank DFW for giving me the opportunity to DJ the 2025 DFW fashion show. I’d also like to thank God for giving me the right mindset to DJ, as well as my stepdad, DJ Casino, for being the one who taught me everything I know about the DJ Culture.
