Rapper Tory Lanez, who is serving 10 years in prison for shooting at the feet of hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the Hollywood Hills, was repeatedly stabbed by a fellow inmate Monday and taken to a hospital.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Lanez — whose real name is Daystar Peterson — was attacked by another inmate at 7:20 a.m. at a housing unit at the California Correctional Institute in Tehachapi.
“Staff immediately responded, activated 911 and began medical aid,” according to a statement from CDCR. “Peterson was subsequently transported to an outside medical facility for further treatment.”
TMZ, which first reported the attack, reported that the rapper was taken to a hospital in Bakersfield, and that the injury was not believed to be life-threatening.
According to a statement posted to his official Instagram account, Lanez was stabbed 14 times, resulting in seven wounds to his back, four to his body, two on the back of his head and one on the left side of his face.
“Both of his lungs collapsed, and he was placed on a breathing apparatus,” according to the statement. “He is now breathing on his own. Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through. He also wants to thank everyone for their continued prayers and support.”
It was unclear what motivated the attack or if any arrests had been made. CDCR officials said the prison’s Investigative Services Unit was investigating, along with the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
Lanez, 32, was convicted in December 2022 of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He was sentenced in 2023 to 10 years in prison.
Megan Thee Stallion testified during the trial that Lanez shot her during an argument on July 12, 2020, following a get-together at Kylie Jenner’s home. She claimed that Lanez told her to “dance,” then fired at her feet.
Last year, Megan Thee Stallion filed a request for a restraining order against Lanez, claiming he was orchestrating a harassment campaign against her from behind bars, conspiring with “bloggers” who post what she claims are defamatory statements about her on social media, questioning the veracity of her claims against Peterson and the evidence that was presented at his criminal trial.
A Los Angeles judge approved the restraining order request in January.
