International graffiti artist Claw Money worked with four young artists from the City of Yarra to create a new mural at Fitzroy Pool.
The unique 23-metre mural was developed by Claw Money (Claudia Gold) and can be seen on the exterior of Yarra’s iconic Fitzroy Pool. Three creative young people from Yarra Youth Services assisted Claw Money with the mural which is a celebration of female artists and street culture.
Eliza McEvoy, Youth Development Officer, Yarra Youth Services described the event as an historic moment capturing Melbourne’s street art culture.
“We’re proud that our young people have had the opportunity to learn from such a talented artist, and to be a part of Claudia’s commitment to women’s empowerment by supporting young women to take part in graffiti and street art culture,” she says.
“The mural will also contribute to Yarra’s vibrant and continuing public arts history,” Ms McEvoy says.
Yarra resident and emerging artist Abigail Anderson says getting the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from Claw Money and the Warnambool Art Gallery was an invaluable experience.
“As an up-and-coming creator with a keen interest in curation and project management, to get the opportunity to work with both Claw Money and Warrnambool Art Gallery, while supporting other young artists, was incredibly empowering and energising, she says.
The mural took two days to complete and was commissioned and paid for by the Warrnambool Art Gallery as part of their Claw Money exhibition.
Through Yarra City Council’s Youth Led Grants Program, three young women were given $3,000 in grants funding to support their assistance fees, coordination and support as part of the project.
