Ethemadassassin delivers some really grown-man music as he teams up with producer D.R.U.G.S. Beats for ‘The Wave Letterman Show‘. Now those hip hop heads who have been following E for a while, understand that when you hit play on his projects, you are going to get simply the very best. The beauty of this project – as opposed to the ‘Bear Handz‘ or ‘Handz of Stone‘ albums, is that we continue to hear that growth of an artist, as an emcee with his flows and delivery, but also with the story-telling bars. This ain’t microwave music, this is movement music. The chemistry between E and D.R.U.G.S. is palpable and it makes for one hell of an audio journey.
Throughout the twelve-track project, each track takes on its own little ‘persona’, and all comes together to form this audio ‘show’. The album art shows the ‘call sheet’ which lists the tracks and features, much like different segments from a late night talk show…. which is now where this all comes full circle and we have ‘The Wave Letterman Show‘! It’s a great concept and one that is delivered really well – most tracks are just E and the score, but there are a handful of featured guests – each adding real value to the project.
Supreme Cerebral and John Jigg$ jump on ‘What U Need‘ and this joint really slaps. It’s a more energetic and in-your-face kind of anthem and is a highlight of the project. Swab & DJ Illogik represent on the more subdued ‘I’m Tired‘ which is such a raw and honest joint that you feel in your mental, then a familiar voice in Seven Da Pantha rips it up on ‘I’ll Be…‘ with great results on this soulful head-nodder. ‘Rely On‘ has that old school church vibe with Born Allah and Tree of Lyfe providing their own stories, and the final features are courtesy of Eff Yoo and Osvn on the upbeat and energetic ‘Jackpot‘. All of these verses add value to the overall project, and ethemadassassin has clearly enlisted these guests with intent to slay bars!
Undoubtedly though, the star of the show is the host – ethemadassassin and his ‘late night band’ of D.R.U.G.S. Beats. E has an incredibly smooth flow, not sounding effortless as such, but rather just so compelling and easy to listen to at the same time. When you pair that with the diverse subject matter, the mature themes and the authenticity that underpins it all, it’s easy to see why ethemadassassin has so many fans / followers etc. He pairs introspective lyricism with witty wordplay, and does it all in such a way that you remain interested and engaged – excited for whatever comes next, but also hitting that rewind to ensure you catch all the intricacies of these street poems.
The end result is 36+ minutes of high quality hip hop. A plethora of dope beats, served up for ethemadassassin and co to really get busy over and have fun with. While this is mature music, there is an element of fun and entertainment built throughout. However, don’t take it TOO lightly – there are so many bars here… and such clarity of concept and impeccable display of delivery – this is far more David Letterman than Jerry Springer. Salute to ethemadassassin and D.R.U.G.S. Beats for delivering this top tier hip hop record, and to the featured artists who stepped up to the plate and crushed their role!
