With much anticipation, the stage is set for the next installment of Rombak Battle, Cambodia’s foremost international hip-hop dance competition. Scheduled for March 23 at Factory in Phnom Penh, this event promises to be a showcase of talent, creativity and cultural fusion.
Building on the success of previous editions held in 2017, 2019, and 2023, Rombak Battle has firmly established itself as a regular highlight of Cambodia’s burgeoning hip-hop scene. In a world where breakdancing is gaining global recognition, as evidenced by its inclusion as a new discipline in the upcoming 2024 Olympic Summer Games in Paris, Rombak recognises the significance of Cambodia’s participation in this dynamic sport.
Rombak Battle is not merely a competition; it’s a platform aimed at nurturing and expanding the hip-hop movement in Cambodia. By fostering connections with neighbouring Southeast Asian countries and opening doors to international dancers through workshops, improvisation spaces, and the annual competition, Rombak aims to provide local artists with opportunities for collaboration and professional growth.
This year’s edition will feature a lineup of international talent, including Bboy Angelo from France, Toppy and Tayida from Thailand, and Bboy Cielo from Australia. Alongside Cambodia’s own Bboy Slick, these seasoned dancers will serve as judges and lead workshops for both amateurs and experienced dancers, including those from Phare Ponleu Selpak.
The main event, set to take place at Factory Phnom Penh, will include competitions in three categories: Breaking (hip-hop on the floor), All Styles (stand-up hip-hop dance), and Rombak Style (freestyle solo over a remix of traditional and hip-hop music). Entry is free for both participants and the public, with MCs A-GVME and Heng guiding the proceedings and energising music showcases by 8GK from Klap Ya Handz, Buubuu, 2MDIE, Really Jing, Buubee, and AK K from Bside.
In addition to the electrifying dance battles, attendees can look forward to presentations by local fashion brands and a dining area offering delectable meals and beverages from sponsors such as Pizza Company, Boots, Kamu Kamu, Dairy Queen, Krispy Kreme, V-Active, and Auskhmer.
As the competition draws to a close, the festivities will continue with an after-party at BBOX Club Factory, featuring internationally renowned DJs Shortkut and Sonny Amerie, who will also provide the beats for the battles.
Rombak Battle 2024 promises to be a celebration of talent, culture, and community, reaffirming Cambodia’s place on the global hip-hop stage while inspiring the next generation of dancers to reach new heights.
