
The Philomath High School dance and drill team finished seventh in 5A/4A/3A/2A/1A Pom and sixth in 4A/3A/2A/1A Hip Hop Friday at the Dance/Drill State Championships.
Competing at the Salem Pavilion, the Shining Stars had a score of 65.36 in the pom competition to finish behind Lebanon (80.81), Parkrose (78.97), Marshfield (76.64) , Wilsonville (75.03), Milwaukie (70.92) and Thurston (66.17). Marshfield and Philomath were the smallest schools in the event.
In the hip hop competition, the Shining Stars were given a score of 61.94. Astoria (81.44) was the winner, followed by Pendleton (80.75), Scappoose (80.44), Gladstone (65.19), Newport (63.72) and PHS.
Elsewhere on Day 1 at the state, Valley Catholic won both the 5A-1A Traditional and 5A-1A Jazz competitions. Sprague was the winner of the all-class Show category and Parkrose took first in 5A Hip Hop.
In the drill-down competition, Philomath senior Elizabeth Burriel finished fourth in the 4A/3A/2A/1A division. Pendleton’s Tony Willingham was the winner. Parkrose’s Ruby Nunley won the 5A drill-down.
The state competition continued Saturday with Class 6A competitions.
