Southpark Mexican’s Parole Denied: Fans Rally For Release Amid Public Outcry

Carlos Coy, otherwise known as rapper “Southpark Mexican” was denied parole earlier this week despite spending well over two decades behind bars.

Coy, who gained fame and success in the mid-1990s was sentenced in 2002 for the alleged aggravated sexual assault of a then 9-year-old girl.  Alligations accused the rapper of inappropriate behavior while the girl attended a sleepover in his Houston-area home on Labor Day weekend back in 2001.  Unfortunately, this was not Mr. Coy’s first and only accusation involving an underage girl.  He was accused of having and participating in inappropriate behavior with several other minors over the span of several years.

Since his sentencing, his record label Dope House Records has continued to periodically release his music over the years in an attempt to what some would call to “keep his legacy alive”.

In short, the reasoning for the denial was simply because the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole strongly felt that Mr. Coy still posed a threat to public safety.

For over two decades, both his family and his fans have campaigned for him to be released from prison.  However, onlookers and even some of his ex-fans have been exceedingly vocal on social media stating that he is not worthy of an early release.

SPM will have another opportunity for early parole, however he will not be eligible for another hearing until January 2028. If he remains in prison for the remainder of his sentence, he likely will not see the light of day until April 8, 2047.  In which he will be 77 years old.

What Is A Day Like In Texas Prisons? A View From Both Sides Of The Bars

Have you ever wondered what life inside a Texas prison is really like? I asked friends who are correction officers and folks who have volunteered at jails. I also asked former inmates, and browsed forums and articles with current and former inmates. Put all together, it paints what I hope is a fairly accurate picture of daily prison life in Texas.
