On November 14, a new exhibition dedicated to American graffiti art will open to the public. Titled STAYING ALIVE, it will be held at the Robertaebasta Gallery, located at Via Fiori Chiari 16 in Milan. Curated by Roberto Mazzacurati and Raffaella A. Caruso, the exhibition celebrates the work of four American graffiti legends known for their contributions to the Old School of writing: Crash, Daze, KooL KooR, and Sonic Bad.
All hailing from New York, these street artists were among the first to transform urban art into a true global cultural movement. This event aims to show how the language of graffiti remains vibrant and inspiring, arriving in the new millennium with undiminished energy. The exhibition will feature around fifty works that showcase the classic style of writing, uniquely interpreted by each artist.
«The power of writing was so explosive, the impact so widespread, that graffiti today has become a ‘normal’ texture on our walls. And yet, every now and then, you spot a particular tag that lights up your eyes, quickens your pulse—the one that makes you walk through the streets of Milan as if you were back in Brooklyn, moving to the beat of Staying Alive,» writes Raffaella Caruso in the curatorial text accompanying the exhibition.
The connection between these artists and Milan is longstanding, dating back to 1984. Forty years later, the pioneers of graffiti return to the Lombard city as guests of the prestigious Robertaebasta Gallery, founded in 1967 by Roberta Tagliavini and now a reference point for 20th-century art and design.
