Street art compared to Banksy appears in charming market town

An eye-catching piece of street art has appeared in a charming Surrey market town. The mural has appeared on a wall in a town centre car park.

The artwork shows a young boy, holding a lead, looking down at his pull-along dog toy, an invention of the late 1960s. It’s the latest in a series of works titled Joyful Nostalgia by Hendog, which aim to bring back memories of the past.

The mysterious graffiti artist has been compared to the internationally famous anonymous artist Banksy, however Hendog is popular in his own right, with more than 12,000 followers on Instagram.

Though the anonymous artist has visited Surrey a number of times and graced the streets with his artworks, his most recent artwork was spotted in Haslemere. The currently untitled piece marks Hendog’s fourth creative venture on the streets of Surrey, with previous murals being found in Guildford, Godalming and Camberley over the last two and half years.

Over the year’s he has made a name for himself in the south of England and beyond for his impressive portfolio of works that have popped up across the region. His work, which always has the Hendog tag beside it, is known for commenting on and spreading awareness on various social issues that include; suicide, homelessness, the cost of living crisis, and the Ukrainian refugee crisis.

His latest work in Haslemere can be found on the wall of the car park not far from the National Trust Swan Barn Walk, and was first spotted by passers-by on Wednesday, March 26. It also was posted on Hendog’s Instagram page (@Hendog) the same day with the caption “I wander”.

It would seem people are still wondering about the Hampshire-based artist’s identity, which he has managed to keep secret since he began his career nearly four years ago. And, it is not because Hendog has been laying low on the national stage, as he has previously been featured by BBC News and ITV Meridian for his murals in hospitals and at the Dover Ports.

SurreyLive last covered the anonymous street artist back in December 2022, when his mural titled “Lost Girl” appeared in Princess Way in Camberley. The artwork depicted a little girl putting up a poster about a missing bear, with a picture and stating ‘Have you seen my bear?’

This followed street art discovered in Guildford only weeks prior that displayed a girl who had dropped her bear. With both pieces working as part of the story for Hendog’s graffiti storytelling project known as ‘Lost Bear’.

The creator’s work has become so popular that he now sells original artwork and prints of his street pieces on his website.
