The room was charged the moment the doors opened. Richmond showed up ready—you could feel it in the air, like the bassline of a song you know by heart. And at the center of it all stood The Ghost himself: Styles P.

He didn’t just perform—he connected. Every track he touched lit something up in the room. The crowd moved with him, bar for bar, rapping his lyrics like they came straight from their own stories. This wasn’t just nostalgia—it was respect. A celebration of an emcee who’s dedicated decades to the craft without ever compromising the realness.
And everyone in the room knew it.
This wasn’t a “get the bag and bounce” kind of set. Styles knew exactly who he was performing for. He felt the city. He joked with us, built with us, dropped gems between tracks the way only an OG can. Richmond felt seen—and that doesn’t happen often. You could feel the unity in the room. We were all there for more than just this show. It was for every mixtape we played on repeat, every debate about whose verse went hardest, every metaphor that stuck with us for years.
And I was there—camera in hand, ears wide open. Living the moment while trying to capture it.
Now here’s where it gets personal.
At one point, I’m snapping shots like crazy, trying to freeze this night in time. Hip Hop has a way of sticking to you. I’m up on stage, watching Styles wrap up another classic, scanning the crowd—and all I can think about is that kid I used to be.
Thirteen years old. In a group home. Youngest of eight.
Early 2000s. 106 & Park and Rap City: The Basement were our daily soundtrack. I still hear the boombox blaring while we played ball on the grass. Posters from XXL and Slam lined the walls. Burned CDs passed around like sacred scrolls. And Styles? His bars weren’t just lyrics—they were motivation. I never touched a gram, but the way he spoke made me want to Boss Up. Gangster and a gentleman—some would say.
Back then, I was just a kid in Southpole jeans, oversized white tee, and gum-bottom Flavs. We were breathing Hip Hop like it was oxygen.
And now? I’m on stage.
Camera in hand.
Capturing a legend.
Part of it.
Not just part of it—contributing to it.
Preserving the legacy.
That moment wasn’t about clout. It was about alignment. A realization: I’m standing in the middle of the culture that helped raise me.
And to top it off, of course Mike Street was there. Telling another wild story—this time about The LOX saving his birthday party (because of course they did). Mike’s a walking time capsule of Hip Hop history. Having him in the building just made it feel even more full-circle.
That night was a reminder: the culture is still here. Still vibrant. Still saving lives and shaping futures.
Styles P shined.
But so did the culture.
And so did the younger me.
