Here’s how you pay homage to the greats. During a stop on his Chromakopia Tour at Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena on March 28, Tyler, The Creator took a poignant moment to honor the late Mac Miller, a beloved artist and his close friend.
While addressing the crowd, Tyler reflected on his personal connection to the city, saying, “What a special place. I had a friend that’s from here. His name was Malcolm. Safe travels, rest in peace to him.” He then shared a cherished memory, adding, “The last time I was here, he rode me around the city. It was great.” The heartfelt tribute resonated with fans, who cheered as Tyler dedicated the night’s performance to Mac Miller.
If you’re not aware, the two influential artists collaborated multiple times, including on their 2013 track “O.K.,” and Mac Miller also made an appearance on Tyler’s Adult Swim series Loiter Squad.
Get this, Tyler has previously spoken about Mac Miller’s genuine love for hip-hop culture. During an episode of Maverick Carter’s SpringHill podcast last year, he contrasted Mac’s authenticity with other artists he felt mocked the genre. “There’s this kid right now, this white kid, regular Caucasian man, and he’s like mocking Future and Gucci Mane, like rap music. And people are like, ‘This shit hard!’” Tyler remarked.
What’s more, he went on to praise Mac Miller and Eminem for their sincere approach to hip-hop, stating, “This is like weird and I’m looking at it and something about it don’t even sit well with me, in comparison to someone like a Mac Miller or Eminem who didn’t seem like they were mocking it; they had a genuine love for it.”
Let’s be real, Mac Miller’s legacy continues to thrive, for years since his untimely passing, with his posthumous album Balloonerism—featuring SZA—which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year, and earned 81,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Tyler’s admirable tribute served as another reminder of the lasting impact Mac Miller had on both his peers and fans worldwide.
