“Peace to Ron G, Brucie B, Kid Capri/ Funkmaster Flex and Lovebug Starski…” – The Notorious B.I.G., “Juicy”
On this date five years ago, the Hip-Hop community lost one of its true pioneers, Lovebug Starski. At just 57 years old, the Bronx legend left behind an undeniable legacy that helped shape the foundation of Hip-Hop culture.
Born Kevin Smith, Starski was a key architect of the genre’s earliest days, not only as a DJ but also as an emcee and producer. He is credited—alongside DJ Hollywood—as one of the first people to use the term “Hip-Hop,” a phrase that would define an entire movement. His influence stretched from the streets of the South Bronx to iconic venues like Harlem World and the legendary Rooftop Roller Disco, where he rocked crowds and helped bridge the gap between party rocking and lyrical emceeing.

Though his passing in Las Vegas was attributed to a heart attack, his impact remains timeless. Lovebug Starski’s contributions to Hip-Hop culture live on, and his name will forever be spoken with reverence among the greats who laid the groundwork for the genre we celebrate today.
Rest in power to a true pioneer.
