A figure of a stickman with two heads has appeared all over a Nottingham suburb. The artwork, pictures of which were posted on an online Nottingham forum (Reddit) on Tuesday, November 26, has been daubed on walls, shutters and electricity boxes in Lenton.
Depicting a humanoid character with two legs, two arms and two bulbous spherical shaped heads, the drawings are made in black paint and look like a graffiti “tag” – the signature of an artist which is depicted repeatedly to raise their profile. The stick figures are not coloured in and vary slightly from location to location.
One, identified as being on Kennington Road – off Wollaton Road near the Crown Island – is split by a signpost in front of it and, as a result, looks more like two figures with half their bodies visible jumping out from either side. It is next to the Chic Beauty and Nails salon.
Another has the letters “L O V E” scrawled around its perimeter. Another has a speech bubble next to it, but photographs posted online do not show what it says inside.
There is one with the words “oh dear” painted on it, and one with the words “cat” and “mundo” either side of the body. Others vary in how wide their legs are apart and how big their heads are.
Photographs of the work, ten in total, were posted on Reddit by an account with the username “nottsgraffitimystery”. Commenters surmised that the graffiti artist themselves was the one posting the images, due to their knowledge of the locations of each, and was promoting their own work.
One person sarcastically said: “Least obvious self-promo.” Many were negative.
Another said: “Not art. Just a tag, and a pretty crappy one making life just that little bit worse for people. It only takes one person to make a reasonable looking street into slum, doesn’t it? See above for examples. Graffiti art can be amazing. This isn’t it.”
A third said: “I hate rubbish graffiti – I know it’s subjective, but dross like this just makes areas worse.” And a fourth said: “This is not art, this is trash. I hate seeing red brick walls destroyed.”
Others said they had also seen the tags. One person said: “I was gonna make a post myself. See them everywhere at work.” And another said: “Looks like the person who used to do the bunny rabbits everywhere.”
