FRUITA, Colo. (KJCT) – A string of vandalism cases has been popping up along Fruita’s outdoor trails and public artworks.
Recent vandalism and graffiti on murals and artworks along the trails have been cleaned and removed. This past week, city officials were notified of one case of vandalism on some murals on the Riverfront Trail and the Saltwash Trails. Some of the affected murals were a part of the Wellspring Project.
Marc Mancuso, parks and recreation director with the City of Fruita, said, “There were 15 to 20 areas that got hit. It is just unfortunate. Our artists take a lot of pride, and it is disheartening to see all the nonsense and work added to our plate to take care of it.” Mancuso told us it took around 8 hours for parks and rec staff to get rid of the vandalism on the murals, and it took another day and a half to get rid of other graffiti off the trail in different areas.
Fruita officials advise artists on works in Fruita to add a coat of graffiti preventative to current and future works.
