The mural of Rohesia De Verdun mural by artists Studio Giftig created during the 2023 SEEK Contemporary Art Festival has been nominated in the Best of 2023 Street Art Cities Awards.

The mural which adorns the side of the Imperial Hotel depicts the Norman noble woman Rohesia De Verdun who was responsible for the building of Roche Castle outside Dundalk. The story goes she promised her hand in marriage to the architect who designed the castle, but pushed him from an upper story window once it was completed.

It was painted by Netherlands-based artists Niels van Swaemen and Kaspar van Leek, who have been working together as Studio Giftig since 2007.

The mural has been a big hit with Dundalk people, who are being asked to cast their vote so that it will win the award on the Street Art Cities website which showcases the best of street art from around the world.

BIDS Manager Martin McEligott said he was “delighted” that the mural was shortlisted. “It’s a great advertisement for Dundalk and shows the great progress we have made in town with this mural project,” he said

He noted that the artists had won the overall award in 2022 and hoped that they would have similar success this year.

“They are two gentlemen and deserve to win.”
