DJ Unk’s cause of death has been revealed. Two days after the hip-hop artist died, his widow, Sherkita Long-Platt, publicly shared what led to his passing.
Long-Platt told TMZ that Unk, who was born Anthony Platt, died in his sleep after suffering a heart attack. He was 43.
She also addressed rumors that her husband’s death was drug-related. Long-Platt told the outlet that she and her family are aware of the speculation. However, she insisted that Unk did not do drugs. That, she said, is the reason she wanted to reveal what really led to her husband’s death.
Unk’s fatal heart attack wasn’t his first cardiac issue. He suffered a heart attack in 2009.
Later, he told XXL that the medical issue was due to “not eating the right food,” and admitted that he had “stopped taking care of myself.”
“I got to get healthy not just for my sake, but also for my kids and for my wife,” he said at the time, adding that he’d “calmed down on the drinking, on the beer, the smoking” in the wake of the scare.
Remembering DJ Unk
Long-Platt first shared news of Unk’s death on Jan. 24. In a Facebook post, she spoke directly to fans.
“Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same,” she wrote. “I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”
Unk’s former label, Big Oomp Records, also addressed his death in a statement posted to their Instagram Story.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as DJ Unk,” the statement read. “DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever.”
Unk got his start in music by joining Southern Style DJs in the ’90s. Later, he signed with Big Oomp Records and released hits including “Walk It Out,” “2 Step,” and “Show Out.”
After his 2009 heart attack, Unk’s music career slowed. He did however, tour and release sporadic singles in the years that followed. He most recently performed at the 2023 BET Awards.
