During the 1980s heyday of Run-DMC, the trailblazing hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay helped to take rap music mainstream and his influence over the genre had since been compared to that of Chuck Berry on rock’n’roll.
A little over a decade later, however, the star, born Jason Mizell, was struggling financially and acted as a middleman trafficking cocaine across America.
It was the 37-year-old’s involvement in the drug trade, prosecutors say, that led to his death in 2002, with his two former friends standing trial for murder in New York this week.
