LL Cool J recently spoke about the Drake-Kendrick Lamar beef, while promoting his new album The FORCE, in a conversation with Charlamagne Tha God. Cool J, who had been involved in quite a few rap battles over the years, expressed sympathy for the Canadian rapper. In the interview released on July 12 on Charlamagne’s YouTube channel, he said:
“You’ll be fine, bro. Don’t even trip. You just don’t take it personal… You can’t be overly sensitive.”
He further spoke about the much popular Kendrick Lamar’s track Not Like Us, during the interview. He said:
“That ‘Not Like Us’ s**t, that s**t’s torture for a m****rf****r. Ah s**t, little kids singing to it. You know that s**t’s bananas.”
Cool J further added,
“I been there, I know it. It can be upsetting… But you gotta control that.”
It could be concluded that LL Cool J seemingly asked Drake to not take things that personally in a rap feud.
LL Cool J talked about lack of competitiveness in today’s rap battles
In the conversation with Charlamagne Tha God, LL Cool J stated that he had noticed a lack of competitive behavior in the rap feud taking place at present.
He added that back in the day the purpose of these feuds was to push the artists to their maximum creativity in wordplay. However, today, it has become more of an emotional fight.
Cool J further criticized some veteran rappers who had faded away for not being active for too long. He said that these rappers had helped build the essence of hip-hop culture, and had a responsibility to carry the legacy forward.
In the latest conversation, after talking about Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s beef, Cool J spoke about the beefs he was involved in. He recalled his feud with Jay-Z in the 90s.
Several rumors surrounding the beef went viral then, one of which was that Cool J had a rap battle with Jay-Z in a parking lot. During the battle, Cool J reportedly sang verses from Funkadelic Relic. However, he revealed:
“Okay let’s talk about what it really is. First of all, I didn’t rap a verse from ‘Funkadelic Relic.’ Okay? That’s the first f**king thing. It’s bullshit. It’s not true.”
He added:
“What did happen though is I see the guy. He’s in the club flashing money trying to get my attention and I’m looking like, okay. And then this man Sauce came up to me and was rapping. Remember, I’m albums in[to my career] now.”
LL Cool J continued:
“Sauce said some rhymes. I said a couple of rhymes. Then I said a little bit of a song, ‘Ain’t No Stopping This.’ A little bit. Then Jay came up rapping. I was out of rhymes… In no scenario was I fully loaded and ready to rhyme.”
During the interview, he further gave a confirmation that his song Loungin, wasn’t meant to be a diss track for Jay-Z. He, however, said that some of the lyrics were inspired by some of Jay-Z’s lyrics.
