Young Thug Trial: YSL Defendant Sues Over Jail Conditions

Young Thug‘s YSL trial continues to have ramifications even after its end, as one of Thug’s co-defendants, Shannon Stillwell, is suing Fulton County, Georgia authorities due to his alleged treatment while in Fulton County Jail.

The suit was filed in federal court on December 10, a week after Stillwell was found guilty of one single charge and sentenced to time served and probation. According to Fulton County records, Stillwell was released from jail on December 17.

Stillwell’s legal action, filed with fellow prisoner Nkenegen Hambrick, is a class action suit, meaning it is filed on behalf of anyone who is, has been or will be detained in the facility. It is against Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat and the county’s chief jailer John Jackson.

The lawsuit claims that conditions at the jail are “cruel and unusual” and violate prisoners’ Constitutional rights.

Among the allegations are that authorities fail to close off access to parts of the prison that have “readily available materials” for creating makeshift weapons; that broken doors are not fixed, so that inmates can “enter or exit jail cells without authorization”; and that prisoners are forced to endure “unclean and unhygenic” conditions and “insufficient and nutritionally inadequate food.”

Stillwell was one of two defendants in Thug’s YSL case to take the case to trial, alongside Yak Gotti.

Gotti was found not guilty on all counts, including a murder charge. Stillwell was found guilty on a single charge, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was acquitted of everything else, including two murder counts, and was sentenced to time served and probation.

The case dates back to May of 2022 when Young Thug and Gunna, along with 26 others, were charged with a variety of offenses including conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, murder, armed robbery and participation in criminal street gang activity.

The trial was the longest in Georgia history. The jury selection process took ten months, and the trial proper began just over a year ago.

Young Thug ended up taking an unusual non-negotiated plea deal on Halloween. He pleaded guilty to all counts, aside from the charge of racketeering and the charge of being a gang leader. To those, he pleaded nolo contendere – which means he neither admits nor denies a charge.

In exchange, he was given a sentence of time served and 15 years of probation, with a “back-loaded” prison sentence of 20 years set to take effect if he violates the conditions of his release.
