YoungBoy Never Broke Again has been sentenced to 23 months in prison, ending a legal saga that began in 2020 with a federal weapons charge in Lousiana. The rapper born Kentrell DeSean Gaulden has secured a global plea deal that also covers gun and drug charges in Utah, where he has lived under house arrest since 2021. Under the deal, YoungBoy will receive credit for time served, and may be released in early 2025.
In a statement to Pitchfork, YoungBoy’s attorneys Drew Findling, Jeremy M. Delicino, and Jon Williams, said: “This has been a long road that involved extensive litigation and ultimately extensive negotiation. Kentrell’s defense team is very happy for Kentrell and we look forward to his many future successes.”
YoungBoy, a convicted felon, was arrested on September 28, 2020, during a music video shoot in Baton Rouge after he was found in possession of a pistol. The rapper relocated to Utah to serve his house arrest; in 2021, authorities raided his home and uncovered evidence of a prescription drug ring, along with another weapon.
YoungBoy admitted to owning the weapons in both the Lousiana and Utah incidents as part of the plea deal, which downgrades four of the Utah charges to misdemeanors and ends a separate state investigation. YoungBoy will serve 60 months of probation following his release from prison.
